Pro Skills & Drills: Mats Lindgren & Passing Progressions

Pro Skills and drills Mats Lindgren Passing Progressions Ice Hockey Tips Coach

Mats Lindgren is a big believer in solving your own problems on the ice. We’ve all seen defensemen and forwards shove the puck up the boards in the defensive zone when under pressure, which basically just transfers one player’s problem to another player. As coaches we want our players to play safe and get the puck out of danger, but these days one mistake can lead to another and another and another and before you know it the puck is in your net.

So let’s pass the puck with authority and confidence.

Inspire Connect Lead

As you’ll see in the snippet below, the former National Hockey League player with the Edmonton Oilers and New York Islanders focuses on passing progressions that involve the feet – both picking the puck up and using your feet to change the picture and improve passing angles and outlets.

If you can believe it, passing is an underrated skill in our game. It’s probably because it’s been easier in the past for coaches to encourage the dump and chase mentality, but these days if you can move the puck, you can mask other deficiencies in your game, even skating.
