When you think about Kamloops Blazers Head Coach Don Hay, it’s impossible not to think about the grassroots development of junior hockey in this country. It’s also hard to believe that he actually spent time in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, Phoenix Coyotes, and Anaheim Ducks. Every coach in the hockey fraternity knows the name Don Hay, and knows that he’s right where he belongs.
In Kamloops as the head coach of the Blazers.
We thought this would be a great time to resurrect one of our favourite videos, Don Hay talking shop as it pertains to responsibilities in the defensive zone. It’s where most coaches start their systems – it’s easier to teach players to defend than it is to score. Here Don starts with one on one progressions and works his way into 3on3 down low, an exercise we all love.
Check out Don Hay in his element below: a pen in hand, a hockey board, and a captive audience.
And congratulations, Coach Don!
