We all know how crucial defensemen are not only to our teams’ defensive zone, but to the offensive action at the other end of the rink as well. It’s no secret that hockey players like Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns are getting paid because they can contribute all over the ice. So where do we start? How do we teach our young d-men to get with the times?

Jim Playfair has the answer: start at the offensive blue line. Work on skills like shooting from the point, playing tight on opposing wingers, and folding to the middle when the other team breaks out. Here’s the evidence, watch Oliver Ekman-Larsson break up the play on the blue line, and then recover the puck in the neutral zone.
