The 2018 TeamSnap Hockey Coaches Conference is now in the books and saw over 300 coaches, from 14 different countries take in the event live.
Thank you to all the coaches who were able to join us and helped make it our best conference to date!
So what now?
If you were in attendance at the conference, then you probably got the message that taking notes wasn’t necessary, because you’ll soon be able to watch every presentation online by buying a membership.
Why would you buy a membership to watch videos from a conference you just attended? Besides not needing to take notes?
Because a membership also gets you access to all of our conferences, and all of our presentations. Plus, each talk is categorized, so if you want some special teams insight or you’re looking for something specific, it’s easy to sort through everything.
What Happens Next?
Two things: the videos captured in Toronto are being edited and spliced. We’ll start publishing them some time around the beginning of September. If there are certain videos you want to see first, hit us up on twitter.
We’re also building a brand new website! While that’s happening, we’re going to take a short break from content until mid August to spend time on the new site and also get outside in the sun a little bit before the start of a new hockey season.
To tide you over until then, here are 5 presentations from the 2018 Hockey Coaches Conference I found particularly helpful (being responsible for the defensemen with my team, I’m admittedly biased).
The new assistant coach of the Edmonton Oilers delivered a defense coaching clinic in 30 minutes that will provide enough insight for an entire season.
Favourite quote: “Would you rather play 60 minutes in your own zone with the toughest, best defender you have? Or 10 minutes in the D-zone and the rest in the offensive zone? Defensemen need to make plays.”
When Todd Woodcroft isn’t cracking jokes as an assistant coach with the Winnipeg Jets, he’s generously sharing his time with the team at The Coaches Site, whether it’s at the conference or the Glass & Out Podcast. Todd’s presentation included a ton of video you’ll be able to use to generate offense from the middle of the ice.
Favourite quote: “As coaches we’re the sum of all our influences.”
The head coach of the Erie Otters delivered perhaps the most hard-hitting presentation of the weekend as he talked about the culture of hockey and the atmosphere we’re responsible to create. Chris talked about his personal struggles with depression – an incredibly brave and inspirational admission that he says has helped his players with their own struggles.
Favourite quote: “We believe strong culture can overcome any obstacle”
Jon Goyens On-Ice
From the Lac St. Louis Lions, Jon Goyen’s presentation kicked off the on-ice portion of our conference. Want your defensemen to get more involved with the offense? Watch Jon’s complete presentation when it’s published.
Favourite Quote: “Sometimes the progression will go sideways because the player turns the wrong way. But that really isn’t a mistake. It’s just a different progression.”
Friend of the site John Becanic’s enthusiasm for the game is infectious. We could record hours of interviews with John on the Glass & Out podcast. John wants your players to play fast because they think fast, and in order to make sure they get the message, we have to coach fast. Easy, right? Don’t miss John’s talk when it’s published.
Favourite Quote: “What’s your goal for today?”
