Perhaps no coach comes under more scrutiny or pressure than the Head Coach of Canada’s World Junior Team. If you are reading this, and you are not from Canada, it’s tough to put into words how Canada rallies around the tournament. For two weeks, the entire country watches, debates and expects nothing short of a Gold medal.
It used to be that Canada was a natural contender. However, the rest of the hockey world has caught up. These days, up to six countries have a shot at the Gold medal. The added competition only enhances the level of planning and preparation that the Canadian coaching staff and Hockey Canada go through. Every detail is accounted for; no stone is left unturned!
This year Dave Lowry has the honour of guiding Canada’s U20 team at the World Junior Championships, December 26-January 5 in Helsinki, Finland. He was an Assistant Coach on last year’s team which captured Gold.
Dave Lowry joined us at our 2015 TeamSnap Hockey Coaches Conference and walked our audience through the process of preparing Team Canada for the tournament. He shares the journey they went through from the summer selection camp right through to the Gold medal game.
Below is an extended clip of his preparation. It’s a behind the scenes look at how Team Canada prepares; and the commitment required to succeed under extreme pressure and competition.
