Derek Laxdal presented during the Virtual Hockey Summit with one goal in mind: improve your team’s defence.

The current Dallas Stars assistant coach (and former Memorial Cup winning bench boss) uses a multi-faceted approach on defensive team play that includes B.I.T.S – Buying Into The System, commitment, defensive fundamentals, winning battles and consistent goaltending.

Derek Laxdal

Laxdal has in the Stars organization since 2014, currently serving as the Assistant Coach of the NHL club. His professional coaching career began with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads. He would lead the team to a Kelly Cup Championship in 2007, while also taking home John Brophy Coach of the Year award. Laxdal would then move on to coach the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL, where he would lead them to two WHL titles and a Memorial Cup in 2014. He became the first coach in WHL history to record three 50 win seasons in a row. With Texas, Laxdal helped the Stars to a AHL Finals appearance in 2018. Before coaching, he had a nearly 20 year playing career that included stops with the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders.
