Somewhere there’s a goalie doing something weird.
Like death, taxes, and first overall picks for the Edmonton Oilers, unique goalies are one of the few sure things the universe has to offer.
In fact, I’m reminded of a former teammate way back in junior who would call his own last name in celebration whenever he made a save. Which was often – he was pretty good.
And that’s the rub – good goalies get away with their quirkiness when they commit to the only thing their teammates really care about: stopping the puck.
Head Coach Input
“A lot of coaches don’t understand the goaltenders, so it’s constant communication all the time. It can get pretty heated at times.”
That’s Sean Murray, a goalie coach here in the lower mainland as well as a goalie coach with the Prince George Cougars. For Sean and PG’s newly-graduated goaltender Ty Edmonds, it’s important for coaches to understand the pressure they’re putting on their goaltenders at a young age.
“There’s something to be said about getting pucks shot at you. At the end of the day it’s worth it,” Edmonds says.
