CoachThem Hockey Drill of The Week: Lalonde neutral zone transition small area game

In Coaching Hockey, Drills by CoachThemLeave a Comment

This drill comes from our recent Chalk Talk Series with Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Derek Lalonde. It’s a simple 3v3 small area game, but has a twist of a quick transition pass from a corner coach. This addition keeps the players active after shots on goal and supports the habit of a quick transition up ice.

Drill Description

Drill focuses on quick transition on neutral zone turnovers.

  • Split group into two teams
  • Play 3 vs 3 inside blue lines
  • When there is a stoppage (goalie covers puck, a goal, or puck exits blue line), coach on nearest blue line makes a quick pass for the defending team to transition out of the zone and attack their opponent
  • Players jump to open space after transition
