NHL Players on Coaches

We spend a lot of time at The Coaches Site working with some of the top coaches in the game to deliver you expert coaching insight directly from the pros. But in preparation for last year’s TeamSnap Hockey Coaches Conference we thought to ourselves:

What do players expect from their coaches?

It makes sense as it’s their performance and ability to grasp what you’re teaching them that dictates your success as a coach. But too often we ignore what is arguably the best feedback available to us as coaches.

So this year we decided to have a player’s panel at our 6th conference in Vancouver. Fortunately for us, we moved our office and Vancouver based conference to the state of the art Fortius Sport & Health in October of 2015. Fortius Sport & Health is an integrated athlete development centre strengthened through philanthropy and focused on optimizing athlete performance for LIFE.  The center and it’s HockeySTRONG program is also the off-season training home to some of the top NHL players who call Vancouver home.

We asked the HockeySTRONG staff (Thank you Molly & Adam) if they could coordinate three of their clients participating in a panel discussion on what players expect and appreciate from their coaches. They obliged and the result was some great feedback that gave our audience plenty to chew on.

Participating players included:

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Edmonton Oilers

Brenden Dillon

San Jose Sharks

Tanner Glass

New York Rangers

Here is what they had to say about their experience with coaches throughout their individual careers –
