Imagine your players sitting around this summer having a frank conversation about you. Are you terrified? Do you feel warm and fuzzy? Depressed? Embarrassed?
It’s an interesting thought. When I interviewed Brandon West last month for the Ask A Coach feature, he told me that he felt it was important for his players to grade him at the end of a season. Makes sense, right? After all, ultimately you answer to your players first and foremost. Not the ownership, not the parents, not the fans.
Speaking of players, we had some pretty good ones host a roundtable discussion at our coaches’ conference last summer: Ryan Nugent Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers, Brendan Dillon of the San Jose Sharks, and Tanner Glass, now with the Calgary Flames organization.
“For me the most important thing is communication.” That’s Glass when asked about his ideal coach. Players want to know where they stand with their coach.
But don’t take my word for it. Watch Ryan, Dillon, and Tanner in the snippet below.
