Troy Ward Head Coach and General Manager of the Madison Capitals, and was a keynote speaker at our 2012 Hockey Coaches Conference where he spoke on the Language of Hockey. After spending a little bit of time with Troy it becomes clear that he leaves no stone unturned. There are no assumptions, nor is anything left to chance in his program. Everything has been thought through, articulated and communicated. When we asked him to speak at our second annual Hockey Coaches Conference he proposed presenting on the language of hockey. Confused, we asked him to clarify what he meant. “Every coach has to develop their own language and ensure that their players learn to speak the same language,” he said. We trusted him and he ran with it. It became clear during the presentation that not a lot of the coaches in attendance had considered having their own language before. But the way Troy explains it, it makes perfect sense. In fact if you don’t, you’re likely wasting valuable time re-explaining things to your players.
