A CONVERSATION BETWEEN A FORMER PLAYER & COACH: THE FUNDAMENTALS OF PLAYING DEFENCE

Knowing Rick Bowness, head coach of the Dallas Stars, and Kevin Bieksa, broadcaster with Hockey Night in Canada and former NHL defenceman, were sitting down to chat is enough to move the needle. Mix in the lessons they shared and this was easily one of the best presentations of the week. Bowness coached Bieksa in Vancouver for seven seasons, so the chemistry between these two is amazing.

HOW TO TEACH GOAL SCORING

What are the three S’s? And what is the difference between “green, yellow and red” shots? Marcus Gustafsson, founder of Hockey IQ Program, gave a presentation that not only answered these questions, it also provided a goal scoring self-evaluation sheet coaches can start using with their players today. Save. Print. Use.

WHY SIZE DOESN’T MATTER: HOW UNDERSIZED PLAYERS ARE MAKING AN IMPACT

Little things can make a big difference in life. As can undersized players in hockey. Emily Engel-Natzke, video coach with the Hershey Bears, discussed the emergence of undersized players over the last 5-to-10 years and how those players use speed, agility, quickness and hockey sense in tight areas against larger opponents.

SKILL ACQUISITION

Bring together Yogi Svejkovsky, the skills coach for the Abbotsford Canucks, and Kris Beech, the skills coach with the Vancouver Giants, and any discussion about skills will be a good one. This one was indeed.

Moderated by Scott Wheeler, national NHL Draft and prospects reporter for The Athletic, this conversation about the modern NHL prospect was joined by Chris Abbott (GM of Rogle BK), Trevor Georgie (president & GM of the Saint John Sea Dogs) and Pat Malloy (NHL player development & performance coach).
